Trends in Education: Bathroom remodeling awash
in costs
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWS
If you're thinking about remodeling your bathroom, expect
it to cost an average of $14,600 for design, appliances, fixtures, materials
and installation. The latest Design Trends Survey conducted for the
National Kitchen and Bath Association also showed a 40% of those surveyed
remodeled baths for $10,000 or less. The average cost of a complete
bathroom at the designer level was $18,100. Although this is the latest
data available, be prepared for more sticker shock. Prices are likely
to be higher now because the information was gathered in 2000.
Here are the other bathroom trends found in the
survey:
1. Cabinets: Multibranch retailers consider light wood the hot cabinet
finish, but designers favor painted cabinet finishes.
2. Countertops: Solid surfaces are the most popular, followed by laminates
and then granite. Colors in the order of preference are neutrals, whites
and greens.
3. Flooring: Tile was overwhelmingly the most popular, especially in
the South. Next comes wood and then vinyl. Certified kitchen/bath designers
and other high-end dealers are more likely to use wood. Neutrals are
overwhelmingly the most popular color followed by multicolor and whites.
4. Lighting: Incandescent is twice as popular as halogen and three times
more popular than fluorescent. Customers favor recessed lighting and
task lighting rather than track lighting.
5. Sinks: The two most popular are one-piece vanity top/bowl and undermount
sinks.
6. Showers/tubs: Almost half voted for separate shower/bath enclosures.
Three in 10 preferred jetted tubs and height adjustable showerheads.
7. Toilets: Elongated styles edge out round toilets. Only 2% voted for
a separate bidet.
