Trends in Education: "Indoor pollution has potential to be hazardous to your health"

According to the article in the Daily Herald, written by by James and Morris Carey, homes built in the last twenty years have been built so tightly that your home cannot expel air correctly. "EPA studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor air levels of many pollutants may be two to five times, and occasionally, more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels."

The laws designed to build homes and save fossil fuels have had a secondary effect: tightly sealed homes "have wreaked havoc with Americans' respiratory systems". Things in your home emit chemical pollutants into your home, and the chemicals cannot escape. Such pollutants come from "dry-cleaned clothes; chloroform from chlorinated water; benzene from tobacco smoke; formaldehyde from fabrics, pressed wood products and insulation; styrene found in adhesives, foam, lubricants, plastics carpets and insulation"; not to mention paint stripper and paint removers. Also included are "central heating, cooling and dehumidification systems, household cleaning and maintenance products...animal dander and mold".

Affects may include headaches, dizziness and allergies. In the long run, you would be up against fatal conditions such as respiratory disease, heart disease and cancer.

To avoid the 'sick building syndrome', circulate your air with outdoor air!! "Proper ventilation - the mixing of indoor air with outdoor air - can revitalize the air in your home and protect your health." Get cigarette smoke out of your home; limit use of fuel-burning appliances; use adequately sized exhaust fans where necessary.
